REVIEW | Evil Dead - The Musical

It was the night of the living dead.

The best way to spend Halloween.. Evil Dead - The Musical is back in Toronto for a limited encore engagement! This hilarious live stage show takes all the elements of the cult classic horror films, "Evil Dead", "Evil Dead 2" and "Army of Darkness", then combines them to make one of the craziest theatrical experiences of all time. Five college students go to an abandoned cabin in the woods, and accidentally unleash an evil force that turns them all into Candarian demons. It's all up to Ash (a house ware employee, turned demon-killing hero), and his trusty chainsaw to save the day. Blood flies. Limbs are dismembered. Demons are telling bad jokes... and all to music.

You don't need to be a fan of "Evil Dead" to love this show. You don't need to be a fan of horror to love this show. You don't even need to be a fan of musical to love this show! As long as you like having fun, this show is for you. I attended the event with a mix of diehard fans and newbies, who all loved it.

The highlight of the production is the inventive ways blood is shown onstage. From pierced hidden body packs to what appears to be nozzles hidden in the walls to a full-on sprinkler system descending from the ceiling, IT'S RAINING RED. The first several rows are called the Splatter Zone. Unleash your inner Carrie White by sitting in them, or you can get a plastic poncho to cover yourself. There were two very unimpressive things during the opening night. First was the weather. It was just the worst. It was raining and cold and had to wait in line outside. Second was it didn't start on time. Again, once inside, still had to wait in line because there were some technical difficulties prior to the show.

The overall experience was still amazing though. This is definitely a show not to be missed and it's only going for a week! Few production photos below:
